George Russell Reflects on Challenging Times Before Austrian GP Victory

George Russell Reflects on Challenging Times Before Austrian GP Victory

Russell's Journey to Recovery

George Russell has expressed that he was at a "low point" prior to his recent success at the Austrian Grand Prix, where he managed to decrease Kimi Antonelli's lead in the championship standings. Russell's victory on Sunday helped him cut Antonelli's advantage to 40 points, as he made up 10 points during the race weekend. His Mercedes teammate, Antonelli, finished third in Spielberg, contributing to Russell's resurgence.

First Win Since Melbourne

This win marked Russell's first grand prix victory since the start of the 2026 season, a significant milestone as he reclaimed second place in the Drivers' Championship from Ferrari's Lewis Hamilton. This win comes just three weeks after Antonelli had surged to a commanding 68-point lead following his record-extending victory in Monaco. In that race, Antonelli became the first driver to secure five consecutive wins at the start of his career.

During this stretch, Russell only achieved one podium finish, indicating a stark contrast to his early-season performance when he was seen as a strong title contender after winning the opening race in Melbourne. Reflecting on the recent races, Russell stated, "It feels like a long time ago, to be honest. It’s been a tough couple of months with some really tricky races, with races that felt like everything was going against me, then some races with some tough performances."

Resilience Amidst Adversity

Russell’s comments underscore the challenges he encountered during a difficult phase in the season. After finishing second in Barcelona—where Antonelli retired due to a technical issue—his victory at the Red Bull Ring was a testament to his resilience. He noted the importance of mental fortitude in overcoming these obstacles, saying, "Going into Barcelona from quite a low point, I needed a lot of resilience to be able to get back and deliver some strong performances."

Following his win, Russell expressed pride in his achievements, particularly in light of the challenges he faced. He remarked, "To get the last two poles, to get the win here this weekend, especially on a track which I don't think is so suited to me, I'm really, really proud."

Looking Ahead: The British Grand Prix

Despite his recent successes, Russell remains cautious about his ability to continue closing the gap on Antonelli. He admitted uncertainty regarding his performance at the upcoming British Grand Prix at Silverstone. Throughout the Austrian GP weekend, there were moments when he struggled to match Antonelli's pace, leaving him puzzled about the inconsistencies in his performance.

"I have a lot of confidence in myself, knowing I can do it," Russell stated, but he acknowledged that he has less confidence in aligning the car's setup and tires effectively. He described the fluctuations in his performance, saying, "Even this weekend, at points I was six tenths behind Kimi, and then come Q3 I was two tenths ahead. I don't honestly have a major answer for that."

Future Goals and Adjustments

Russell is keen to work closely with his team to achieve a consistent setup that would allow him to replicate the performance levels he experienced in the previous season. He noted, "Those times where I managed to deliver the pole laps, the car and the tires have felt more akin to last year, when I could deliver those performances every lap throughout a weekend. So, I'll be working hard with my team to try and emulate that."

The next event in the 2026 Formula 1 season is the much-anticipated British Grand Prix, which will feature a Sprint weekend format. Coverage will begin on Thursday and culminate with the race on Sunday at 3 PM, available live on Sky Sports F1 and Sky One.
