Max Verstappen Discusses Missed Opportunity at Austrian GP
Max Verstappen, the Red Bull Racing driver, has indicated that a strategic choice made by the team might have hindered his chances of winning the Austrian Grand Prix against George Russell. Despite starting the race and engaging in some early confrontations, Verstappen found himself within striking distance of the lead.
During the race, Verstappen managed to close the gap to just one second behind Russell as they approached the final phase before the pit stops. However, the Mercedes team opted to pit Russell first with 28 laps remaining, which forced Red Bull to extend Verstappen's stint. He eventually pitted with 22 laps to go, aiming to gain a tire advantage for the concluding laps.
Following his final pit stop, Verstappen faced an 11-second deficit but finished the race a mere 1.6 seconds behind Russell. Reflecting on the race strategy, Verstappen remarked, "In hindsight, it's easier to say that but we will look back at it. It was still going to be a long stint on the tyres, but at the same time, my degradation was a bit better than George, so I'm pretty confident I could have kept him behind."
A Good Step Forward
Despite the outcome, Verstappen acknowledged the positive aspects of the race, especially following a challenging start to the season. He stated, "It's still a very good result after quite some tough times, lately being better, now for the first time fighting for a win. That's a good step."
Before this race, Verstappen had only secured one podium finish, placing third at the Canadian Grand Prix, and had often struggled to match the pace of the leading Mercedes cars.
Red Bull's Performance Improvements
Red Bull introduced a significant upgrade package for their car prior to the Austrian GP, which seems to have made a notable impact on their performance. Verstappen expressed hope that the improvements would carry over to the next race at Silverstone, although he acknowledged the differing track layout would present new challenges. He added, "Also battery management, we need to wait see what we can do there, so we will go at it weekend after weekend."
Strategic Considerations
Sky Sports F1 analyst Karun Chandhok raised some intriguing questions about Verstappen's weekend, suggesting that had he not experienced a crash during qualifying, he could have started in a better position, possibly challenging for the win more aggressively. Additionally, he pointed out that the team could have altered their strategy during the final stint.
Chandhok opined that extending the final stint or pitting earlier could have increased the pressure on Russell, potentially allowing Verstappen to capitalize on any mistakes made by the Mercedes driver. “They took the pressure away from George. He ramped it down to 1.2 seconds, was on his gearbox, piling the pressure on George, then gave him that reprieve by extending that stint and the gap went to 10.5 seconds,” he noted.
Red Bull's Future Prospects
Coming into the season, there were concerns regarding Red Bull's power unit, as they developed their own engine in collaboration with Ford. However, the primary challenges have emerged from the chassis and aerodynamics of the RB22, with Verstappen previously expressing dissatisfaction with the car's balance and grip.
Red Bull’s team principal Laurent Mekies acknowledged that the upgrades implemented for the Austrian GP were a meaningful step forward. He said, "The most satisfying element was the pace. For the first time this season, we had the pace to be very close to have enough to win so a big credit to everyone back in Milton Keynes."
Mekies emphasized the importance of this improvement, stating that it is uncommon to find such significant gains in performance over just a few races. He also recognized the need for continued development as competitors would likely introduce their own updates throughout the season.
